This 1958 Chevrolet Delray is a long term owned example, held by the current owner for approximately 30 years, and has been converted from its original six cylinder, column shift configuration to V8 power. It is powered by a 5.7 litre naturally aspirated V8 paired with a three speed Turbo 350 automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. The odometer currently displays 83,000 miles* TMU.

For 1958, Chevrolet introduced a substantially redesigned full size passenger car range with new body and chassis architecture. The Delray became Chevrolet’s entry series for the model year, replacing the previous One Fifty line and sitting beneath the Biscayne, Bel Air and Impala in the range. Offered in two door and four door configurations, the Delray was used as a standalone Chevrolet series for the 1958 model year before the model hierarchy changed again for 1959.

Finished in teal and cream, the seller advises that teal was the vehicle’s original colour and that the current paintwork was applied approximately 15 years ago. The car rides on 15 inch wheels that were already fitted when acquired by the current owner. Mechanical changes made during the ownership include front disc brakes, lowered springs, power steering, replacement shock absorbers, a rebuilt and balanced tailshaft, a B&M shifter and an LPG fuel system. The cabin has also received replacement seatbelts and an upgraded sound system with new speakers and a subwoofer.

The previous owner imported the vehicle from the United States before it was acquired by the current owner approximately 30 years ago. It initially retained its six cylinder engine and three speed column shift manual transmission before the current V8 and Turbo 350 drivetrain were installed. Following an axle failure during a Bay to Birdwood event, the engine was later dismantled and sent to Head Shed for machining including a rebore, with Drever Auto attending to the axles and engine assembly. Drever has also serviced the vehicle throughout the current ownership. The seller estimates the rebuilt engine has travelled approximately 3,000 to 4,000 km, with the most recent service completed around 12 months ago.

According to the seller, the paintwork on the roof is showing its age, with smaller marks around the body and dents and scratches to the bumpers. Previous repairs have been carried out around the front guards near the headlights. The interior has been renewed apart from the headlining, while some cracking is noted to the steering wheel. A replacement speedometer has been installed, meaning the displayed odometer reading should be treated as TMU. The ignition lock requires replacement, with a replacement unit included among the spares, and the right hand indicator does not currently self cancel.

Included with the vehicle are a 1958 workshop manual, the original fuel tank, an original four barrel carburettor, spare front and rear windscreen rubbers, receipts relating to the engine work, spare keys and other retained spare parts.
