This 1969 AMC AMX 390 fitted with the optional "Go-Package" is an American-built muscle car in good condition and without significant modification. Under its bonnet sits a naturally-aspirated 390 cubic inch (6.4-litre) V8 engine that produces 235kW and 576Nm. This power is routed through the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. The odometer of this car displays 26,506 miles. Popularity of muscle cars hit an all-time high in the late 1960s and although most buyers flocked towards popular models including the Ford Mustang, Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet Camaro, and Dodge Challenger, there were other manufacturers producing impressive things too. Less common was AMC (American Motors Corporation) and its AMX two-door coupe. The AMX offered strong performance thanks to a selection of large capacity V8s at a low price.
But, it also earned significant praise among media and the public for its sports car-like handling. It could go round corners as well as it could tear down a drag strip, and this was the AMC AMX’s point of difference. The big 390ci V8 versions are now among the most valuable in the line-up, while 1969 examples such as this car benefit from subtle upgrades over the 1968 original. This car is painted in the era-appropriate shade of off white and it specifies a set of classic black GT stripes down the length of the car. Inside the cabin it’s upholstered with black leather trim and wood-effect panelling. It comes with minimal modifications aside from a four-core radiator and a thermo fan. The car rides on a set of 15-inch US Mags wheels wrapped in Galaxy/Sumitomo tyres.
Manufactured in the United States and supplied new to its home market, this car was imported to Australia in 2013 and has been owned by three people since arriving. The current owner has held the vehicle since 2021. Since that time the vehicle has added 1000 miles to its odometer and has had its oil and filters changed twice – most recently in September 2024. The visual condition of this AMC AMX is very good – especially for a vehicle of its age. Evidence suggests it has been repainted in the past, with the current finish showing in good condition. Light swirl marks are identified over the black stripes. The chrome bumpers appear in shiny order, though one chrome strip is missing from the rear window, however is on order.
Some early signs of pitting and patina are noted around locks and badges, as expected for this car’s age. The aftermarket wheels show in fair condition. Inside, this AMX has been very well maintained. The leather seats appear with no tears or scuffs, and the cushions haven’t deformed with age. The wood veneers haven’t cracked and the instrumentation functions as normal. No damage is noted on the carpets, door panels, or headlining. All accompanying documents and invoices will be supplied with this car.
It’ll also come with the original fan and the original wheels. As per Trading Garage Terms and Conditions, although Trading Garage has completed the following checks, bidders must satisfy themselves to the accuracy of the description and do any research they feel necessary before bidding. All listings are sold in Australian dollars. This car is registered in QLD until 28/2/25. There are no security interests registered on the PPSR against the serial number and it is not recorded as written off or stolen.
