This 1970 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Pro Touring RHD is a comprehensively restored and modified right-hand-drive example featuring a 408ci Windsor stroker V8 and a five-speed manual transmission. The naturally aspirated 6.7 litre V8 is reported to have produced 373 kW (500 hp) at the rear wheels on a dynamometer and is paired with a Tremec TKO 600 five-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels through a Ford nine-inch differential. The replacement GPS speedometer currently shows approximately 9,800 km since the restoration, with total mileage considered TMU.

The first-generation Mercury Cougar was introduced for 1967 as Mercury’s more luxurious counterpart to the Ford Mustang, combining the same basic platform with distinctive styling and a more upmarket interior. For 1970, the Cougar received revised frontal styling while the XR-7 remained the premium model, with 18,565 XR-7 hardtops produced for the model year.

This example underwent an extensive Pro Touring build between 2012 and 2018 and has been converted to right-hand drive. The 408ci Windsor stroker uses Dart cylinder heads, JE/SRP pistons, a hydraulic camshaft and lifters, Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley 750 CFM carburettor, MSD ignition, MagnaFuel electric fuel pump, ceramic-coated headers and a custom exhaust system. Cooling is handled by an alloy radiator with twin thermo fans, while the battery has been relocated to the boot and the vehicle has been completely rewired.

The driveline incorporates the Tremec TKO 600 transmission with a short-throw shifter and alloy bellhousing, together with a Ford nine-inch differential fitted with a Truetrac centre, Moser 31-spline axles and 3.5:1 gearing. Four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, reset rear leaf springs and CalTrac suspension bars form part of the upgraded chassis specification.

The body has undergone extensive modification, including replacement rear quarter panels, firewall and passenger-side front floor pan, together with additional chassis bracing. Exterior changes include a custom fibreglass Boss-style bonnet scoop, adjustable fibreglass rear wing, deleted side markers and shaved and tucked bumpers. Dynamat has also been installed throughout the cabin and firewall.

Inside, the Cougar retains its original dashboard while incorporating a custom centre console, additional AutoMeter instrumentation, GPS speedometer, Sparco steering wheel, custom bucket seats and Willans three-point harnesses. The rear seating has been removed and a push-button starter fitted.

Recent maintenance carried out within the past 12 months includes new hydraulic lifters, rebuilt MSD distributor, Holley 750 CFM carburettor, Edelbrock water pump, thermostat, radiator hoses, spark plugs and battery, together with an oil change and tune. The gearbox has also been serviced, with a new clutch master cylinder and hydraulic release bearing fitted.
