This 1971 Valiant VH Charger is a beautifully built R/T tribute coupe, constructed around a 383 cubic inch Mopar Magnum V8 said to have been stroked to 496 cubic inches, driving the rear wheels through a three speed automatic transmission and a 9 inch Ford differential. The odometer reads 988 miles and is noted as TMU.
The VH Charger was introduced in 1971 as the coupe variant of Chrysler Australia's VH Valiant range and quickly became one of the country's most recognisable muscle cars. Its shorter wheelbase, broad rear haunches, and fastback inspired profile gave it a distinct identity within the local performance car market, while the R/T versions became closely associated with Chrysler's early 1970s motorsport ambitions. The Charger's combination of Australian styling, six and eight cylinder performance options, and limited production performance variants has made the model a long standing collector favourite.
This example is presented in gold and bronze with black R/T style striping and a custom black bonnet with shaker style scoop. The car is fitted with chrome bumpers, quad headlamp front treatment, R/T badging, polished five spoke wheels, white letter tyres, and black exterior detailing. The interior is trimmed in black vinyl and features front bucket seats, a centre console, aftermarket steering wheel, digital dashboard, aftermarket audio, and air conditioning. The vehicle is registered as a four seat coupe.
According to the seller, this example has been extensively modified and engineered to R/T tribute specification with the build oriented toward serious performance. The 383 cubic inch Mopar Magnum V8 is said to have been stroked to 496 cubic inches and fully rebuilt, with a dyno recording of approximately 683hp — with further work completed since that session, the engine is reported to perform beyond that figure, though no current dyno sheet is available. Additional mechanical upgrades are said to include MSD ignition, an XFI Sportsman ECU, a custom radiator, battery relocation and engineered extractors, with approximately $30,000 spent by the current owner addressing and refining the build. Power steering and air-con is also fitted to the vehicle. The vehicle has been engineered and is said to be accompanied by all Western Australia engineering certificates and permits, including for the extractors and the fitment of different front and rear wheel sizes. The registration record lists the engine number as OC142245.
The paintwork and bodywork are approximately two years old and present well, with the R/T style stripes and custom bonnet completed as part of the build. Mileage has been estimated from the original gauge reading and digital gauge reading combined.
The sale includes all receipts and invoices for work completed, along with all Western Australia engineering certificates and permits.
